The 150th Anniversary committee invites organizations and businesses throughout the community to celebrate Alpharetta’s Sesquicentennial! Create a special 150th event, or theme an existing event in honor of the Sesquicentennial. If an event is officially sanctioned by the 150th Anniversary committee, the City of Alpharetta will list the event on the Sesquicentennial web page and provide the Sesquicentennial logo for use in all promotional efforts.


Alpharetta’s 150th Kick Off & Historical Marker Unveiling

Past and present City of Alpharetta officials, employees, members of the press, and the public are invited to an afternoon event featuring the re-enactment of the signing of the City Charter in 1858 and, of course, birthday cake. Join the excitement as Alpharetta officially commemorates our 150th Anniversary!
An 1858 historic map of Alpharetta, honoring the City’s place in history as the old Milton County seat, will be unveiled and available to take home.
The City will also unveil the first Alpharetta Historical Marker at the Mansell House (circa 1910), the first of 16 to be erected in honor of Alpharetta’s Sesquicentennial.

Alpharetta historical markers will be unveiled in a new, free History Walk in downtown Alpharetta. Learn more about Alpharetta’s yesteryear from the Alpharetta Historical Society. The History Walk begins February 7 with the unveiling of 16 historical markers at notable locations throughout the downtown business district. On-going History Walks are available throughout the year.

National Arbor Day

Event held at Alpharetta’s new environmental park. Arbor Day’s 2008 theme is tree care in times of severe drought. Workshops and displays will teach citizens how to preserve individual trees and Alpharetta’s historically significant trees.
Girl and Cub Scouts may earn environmental Badges. The t-shirt art contest winners and participants will receive prizes and display their artwork. The event starts at 11 am and end at 3 pm.

Alpharetta Marathon & Half Marathon

Alpharetta’s biggest sports and fitness event of the year is expected to have over 2,000 runners.
Celebrating the Sesquicentennial by incorporating the 150th theme into the marathon prizes:
*150th runner to cross the marathon finish line receives $150
*150th runner to cross the half marathon finish line receives $150
*The registered runner from the farthest distance receives $150
*$20 goes to the first runners to tell us whey they registered
*Cheer groups of 10 or more people can send us a photograph of their group in action to win $150 for their favorite charity

Old Milton Country Fair

Barbecue and blue grass music, old-time carnival games, heritage and country crafts and demonstrations, pony and train rides, historic exhibits, classic cars, storytelling and more. 3rd Annual Scarecrow Harvest

In April 2008, the City of Alpharetta hopes to receive a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts to fund Alpharetta’s 150th Anniversary Mural. Upon receipt of the grant, the mural will be commissioned immediately and rendered on the wall of the present day Cotton House Furniture store on Milton Avenue in Downtown Alpharetta. The mural will be unveiled at the 3rd Annual Scarecrow Harvest on Saturday, October 4, 2008. Join us in a family style picnic on the park with old time games. Signed mural prints and special merchandise will be available for purchase.

Celebrate all the magic of the holidays at this traditional event that sparkles with live music, children’s performances, the arrival of Santa and Mrs. Claus on a City fire truck, and the lighting of Alpharetta’s live 45-foot tree with 10,000 twinkling lights. Mayor Arthur Letchas and his wife, Sally read aloud the classic “Twas the Night before Christmas.” Visits and photographs with Santa in the gazebo. Free holiday children’s crafts. The Alpharetta Women’s Club will present an afternoon Historic Tour of Homes prior to the Tree Lighting in honor of Alpharetta’s Sesquicentennial.
