Alpharetta Police Operations To Be Reviewed In March

The City of Alpharetta’s Department of Public Safety will virtually host a team of law enforcement professionals from around the country who will be assessing all aspects of the department’s police operations and management. Members of the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA) are making the three-day visit in March as part of a periodic process to determine if the Alpharetta Department of Public Safety meets the Commission’s state-of-the-art standards to renew its national accreditation. This is a renewal of accreditation for our police operations that we have held since 1996. This will be the first time our 911/Communications operations will take part as a separate entity and apply for their initial accreditation.

As part of the virtual assessment for both entities, a public information and comment session will be held on Tuesday, March 30th beginning at 5:00PM virtually at the following link https://zoom.us/j/92461489232 . During this session, Alpharetta residents and other interested individuals will be encouraged to share their thoughts and opinions on public safety issues and the service provided by Alpharetta’s public safety professionals. Those who cannot attend the session but would like to provide comment may do so via telephone on Tuesday, March 30 between 1:30 PM and 3:30 PM by calling 678-297-6194. Written comments may also be submitted to the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA), 13575 Heathcote Boulevard, Suite 320 Gainesville, Virginia 22030-2215.

Individual telephone comments as well as those provided at the public information session are limited to 10 minutes and must address the agency’s ability to comply with CALEA’s 480 standards of operations. The assessment team is composed of law enforcement practitioners from similar out-of-state agencies, who will lead the assessment of the Alpharetta Department of Public Safety’s police operations. “The assessors will review written materials, interview individuals, and visit offices and other places where compliance can be witnessed. Once the Commission’s assessors complete their review of the agency, they report back to the full Commission, who will then decide if the agency is to be granted re-accredited status.
