Alpharetta’s Recreation, Parks & Cultural Services Department Receives Agency of the Year Award

Alpharetta’s Recreation, Parks & Cultural Services Department was awarded the Georgia Recreation and Parks Association (GRPA) Agency of the Year Award at their annual awards banquet on Wednesday, November 6 in Dalton, GA. This award is presented to top agencies based on population size with Alpharetta falling within the 50,001 – 80,000 population category.

 

The Agency of the Year Award recognizes exemplary agencies who demonstrate excellence and leadership in delivering quality programs, parks and services to their communities. Highlights from the Department’s nomination include the opening of the Alpharetta Arts Center, a 10,000 sq. ft. state-of-the-art space for classes, gallery exhibits, blackbox theater and an outdoor classroom. Also featured was the establishment of the Alpharetta Farm at Old Rucker Park which has spurred the creation of the city’s Community Agriculture Program, with a vision for education and recreation for the community through sustainable agriculture and the

 

Other notable accomplishments include an influx of public art throughout the city featuring sculptures and live musical performances; an oral history documentary project in partnership with the local historical society; a collaboration with BrewAble, a café with a mission of providing meaningful employment and job skills training to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities which is housed inside the Alpharetta Community Center; and a new Health & Wellness Initiative aimed at providing free quality wellness programing year-round throughout the city.
