Contracts Awarded For Webb Bridge Road Construction

Released December 16, 2022 04:50 PM
The City of Alpharetta has awarded contracts valuing $14 million to begin construction on two sections of a multi-phased project to improve Webb Bridge Road.  The contracts are for a section of the project from Webb Bridge Park to Maid Marion Close and a second section that runs from the Big Creek Greenway to just east of North Point Parkway.

Project Overview: Webb Bridge Park to Maid Marion Close
A key element of Phase 2 is the construction of a roundabout at the intersection of Webb Bridge Road and Webb Bridge Way.  The project will narrow the width of the travel lanes on Webb Bridge Road to 10.5 feet, which will allow for a reduction in the speed limit.  East of the roundabout, a 10-foot-wide sidewalk and pedestrian lighting will be added on the north side of the road while the existing sidewalk will be maintained on the southside.  West of the roundabout, the existing sidewalk will be maintained on the north side of the road while an 8-foot-wide sidewalk, 6-foot-wide landscape area, and pedestrian lighting will be added on the south side.

The City anticipates construction of this section taking approximately 18 months to complete.

Project Overview: North Point Parkway to Big Creek Greenway
Construction of the Phase 4 segment will require approximately 30 months to complete because the project includes the replacement of the bridge over Big Creek, making it necessary for the project to be staged so that Webb Bridge Road can remain open during construction.  The new bridge will feature 12-foot wide travel lanes and 11-foot-wide sidewalks on both sides of the road to accommodate pedestrians and bicycles.

In conjunction with the bridge replacement, Fulton County will remove a water line that runs along the current bridge and construct a new line along the new bridge.

Between North Point Parkway and the bridge, the road will feature 10.5-foot-wide travel lanes, 4-foot-wide bike lanes, a 10-foot-wide sidewalk on the south side of the road, and pedestrian lighting.  On the north side of the road, the existing sidewalk that runs from North Point Parkway to Strath Drive will remain while a 10-foot sidewalk will be constructed from Strath Drive to the new bridge.

From the bridge to the Greenway, the project will result in 10.5-foot-wide travel lanes, 12-foot-wide sidewalks on both sides of the road, and pedestrian lighting.

About The Webb Bridge Road Improvement Project
Work on the Webb Bridge Road Improvement Project began in 2016 with a series of public input sessions and design charrettes through which residents, especially those living along the corridor, guided development of the initial design concepts.

The project is designed to advance Webb Bridge Road’s role as a residential collector corridor through a design that reduces vehicular speeds and elevates operational safety while also providing enhanced pedestrian, bicycle, and landscape amenities.  The overall project stretches from Webb Bridge Way westward to Morris Road but is divided into five segments:

     • Phase 1: Extending the Culvert/Tunnel and access to Big Creek Greenway from Webb Bridge Road

     • Phase 2: Webb Bridge Park to Maid Marion Close including a roundabout at Webb Bridge Way

     • Phase 3: Maid Marion Way to the Big Creek Greenway

     • Phase 4: Big Creek Greenway to North Point Parkway

     • Phase 5: North Point Parkway to Morris Road

Phase 1 of the project was completed in 2021.  The contracts approved by the Alpharetta City Council on December 12 are for construction of phases 2 and 4.  The City anticipates bidding construction of the Phase 3 segment during the second quarter of 2023.  A schedule has not been established for Phase 5, which will be influenced by the Georgia Department of Transportation’s anticipated replacement of the bridge over Georgia 400.
