Alpharetta Upgrades Community Center With New Gymnasium Floor

Released November 02, 2022 02:04 PM

Built from the foundation up, the new 9,000 square-foot gym floor at the Alpharetta Community Center has been installed and is ready for game time. Constructed of maple hardwood, the gymnasium reveals a stunning floor with a glistening finish.

Well over 20,000 students and thousands of residents have enjoyed the gymnasium since the Alpharetta Community Center’s construction in 1997, but it was suffering from more than age and routine wear.  The gym floor had a moisture problem for at least 10 years and was showing signs of disrepair after the center was flooded in 2016. Moisture had built up in the floor causing it to buckle.

On July 28, 2022, the Alpharetta City Council approved a $175,000 contract with Success Sports Surfacing to replace the gym floor at the Alpharetta Community Center located at 175 Roswell St. The resulting work has eliminated moisture points, installed a moisture barrier, and completely removed the cracked foundation that was continually altering the floor’s structural integrity.

On November 1, the City of Alpharetta held a ceremonial Tip-Off Championship christening the new Alpharetta Community Center gym floor. County, State, and City officials all joined in C-O-O-L, the Alpharetta Department of Recreation, Parks, and Cultural Services’ version of the classic game H-O-R-S-E.

“We’re very proud to have such a high-quality gym in our community. With a state-of-the-art foundation, this gym floor is built to last,” says Morgan Rodgers, Director of Alpharetta Recreation, Parks & Cultural Services Department. “Just in time for basketball season, our gym offers residents an opportunity to live out the ARCPS motto - ‘Live Well. Be Cool. Have Fun.’ every day. We hope this court will create of a lot of memories and success.”

“Crews began work late-summer to remove all the floorboards, and the bleachers from the walls, and level all the concrete,” says Kirk Kurby, Recreation and Parks Projects Manager. “Once the materials arrived on site, the crew began installing the floor board-by-board, painting the lines, staining, varnishing and curing. It’s been a long process, but we finally made it.”

The Alpharetta Community Center Gymnasium offers a wide array of health and fitness options for the community such as gymnastics, youth dancing, instructional sports, fire safety, and much more.
