Join us for what promises to be a splendid presentation by David Shively to a few of the remote locations he has photographed to gain insight into this special class of nature travel photography. Once the exclusive realm of explorers and scientists, the Antarctic is increasingly accessible by “civilians.” Join us in May for a visit to the Falkland Islands, South Georgia Island, and the Antarctic Peninsula. The ecosystem of this region is like no other. While the scale of the place is enormous, it is an environment that is surprisingly fragile. We’ll sample some of the wildlife and learn about both the history of the region and the current efforts to preserve and protect the hundreds of species that live there. We’ll also talk about the challenges and opportunities for photographers in environments like this one. And yes, there will be penguins.

David Shively
David Shively is co-coordinator of GNPA’s Griffin Chapter and a member of the GNPA board. His photography spans three principal areas: international cultures; wildlife—particularly sea birds; and images that evoke the life and history of the small, southern towns he has discovered since moving to Georgia. David has learned from workshops with National Geographic photographer John Shaw, and with New York-based photo artist Jean Miehle. His recent trip to the Antarctic region was an opportunity to capture both the history and the wildlife of a unique ecosystem in a challenging environment.
