Class is back in session for Fulton County Schools starting Monday, August 7, and that means speed limits in Alpharetta’s school zones will be in effect and enforced by our School Zone Speed Cameras.
Why does Alpharetta use cameras to enforce speed limits in our active school zones?
During a study conducted in six Alpharetta school zones, 3,557 drivers were found to be traveling in excess of 11 miles per hour over the posted speed limit while the school zones were active. The sample, which was taken during a nine-hour period in April 2019, found that more than 54% of violators were traveling at least 15 miles per hour over the posted speed limit with 14.2% exceeding the speed limit by 20 to 24 miles per hour.
Very minimal reductions in speed make the roads a lot safer, especially for children. A person is about 70% more likely to be killed if they are struck by a vehicle traveling 30mph versus 25 mph. There is a 93% chance of survival if a pedestrian is struck at 20mph. Small differences in speed make a huge difference, especially in school zones, and the data from a report compiled in Spring 2022 proves that the camera enforcement program is reducing speeding in Alpharetta’s school zones.
