School Speed Zone Camera Enforcement Program

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Why did I receive a violation?

Violations are issued in accordance with Georgia Code O.C.G.A. § 40-14-18, which allows for the use of automated speed detection devices in school zones from one hour prior to the start of the school day, until one hour after the end of the school day. This includes "the time in which instructional classes are taking place."  The posted times regulate the strictness of the enforcement, as that is when children are actively coming and going from the school.

Will I accrue points on my license or have the violation reported to my insurance company?

These violations are considered civil offenses and not a criminal violation. As such they are not reported to the Department of Driver Services for points or to insurance companies.

What happens if I do not pay my violation?

If the violation remains unpaid, ultimately it will be reported to the Georgia Department of Revenue as allowed under State Law. Once received by the Department of Revenue, the vehicle’s registration will not be allowed to be renewed, and the title to the subject vehicle cannot be transferred to a new owner until the fine is paid.

Why is the City of Alpharetta using school speed zone enforcement cameras?

The program was instituted after a nationwide spike in pedestrian fatalities over the past decade in which Georgia became one of the 5 deadliest states for pedestrians, with the seventh highest fatality rate.  Traffic fatalities are the number one cause of death for children aged 5-14 and for young adults (aged 15-29).

During a study conducted in six Alpharetta school zones 3,557 drivers were found to be traveling in excess of 11 miles per hour over the posted speed limit while the school zones were active.  The sample, which was taken during a nine-hour period in April 2019, found that more than 54% of violators were traveling at least 15 miles per hour over the posted speed limit with 14.2% exceeding the speed limit by 20 to 24 miles per hour.

Very minimal reductions in speed make the roads a lot safer, especially for children.  A person is about 70% more likely to be killed if they are struck by a vehicle traveling 30mph versus 25 mph.  There is a 93% chance of survival if a pedestrian is struck at 20mph. Small differences in speed make a huge difference, especially in school zones.

Are the speed zone enforcement cameras accurate?  How do they work?

The camera system uses an advanced Radar-based speed measurement system that is extremely accurate.  When a speeding vehicle is detected, a picture of the license plate is captured, and the registered owner is listed on the violation.  The violations are then submitted for approval by a Sworn Officer from the Alpharetta Department of Public Safety prior to being issued.  The system undergoes a daily diagnostic self-check, and detailed maintenance logs are kept.  No violation will be approved if a device is found to be malfunctioning.

How will I know where the speed zone enforcement cameras are located

Signage has been placed before the school zones that are clearly visible warning drivers that the roads are enforced by cameras.
