Road Closed Ahead News Graphic

Year-Long Closure Of Kimball Bridge Road Over GA400 Begins May 8

Released April 25, 2023 01:31 PM
Get ready, Alpharetta motorists, because changes are coming to Georgia 400 and Kimball Bridge Road that will impact you.  Prepare for lane shifts and reduced speeds on Georgia 400 beginning May 6 and the year-long closure of Kimball Bridge Road between North Point Parkway and Northwinds Parkway beginning May 8.

As part of its GA400 Express Lanes Project, the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) is replacing the current bridge over the highway on Kimball Bridge Road.  When completed, the new bridge will allow for the new lanes being constructed on GA400 as part of the express lanes project.  For those traveling on Kimball Bridge Road, the new bridge will provide two vehicular travel lanes in each direction, a center median, wide sidewalks on both sides, improved lighting, and decorative elements.

According to GDOT and their contractor, CW Matthews, demolition of the existing bridge and construction of the new one will take 365 days to complete.

On May 6, in preparation for the start of that work, GDOT will restripe a section of GA400 between Haynes Bridge Road and Old Milton Parkway to shift travel lanes so that the construction area is safe for the public and construction crews.  A reduced speed limit of 55mph will also go into effect along the entire stretch of GA400 in Alpharetta.

Beginning May 8, Kimball Bridge Road will close to all traffic between North Point Parkway and Northwinds Parkway.  The closure is expected to be in effect for a full year until the new bridge over GA400 opens.  Variable message boards are already in place on Kimball Bridge Road to warn drivers of this upcoming road closure.

Closure of the road is necessary because there is no room to construct a temporary bridge while the new bridge is being constructed.  The existing bridge must be demolished and the new bridge constructed in its place.

While the Kimball Bridge Road closure is in place, motorists will use North Point Parkway or Northwinds Parkway to detour to either Old Milton Parkway or Haynes Bridge Road to get around the closure.
