Running For Office

The City of Alpharetta holds non-partisan municipal elections in odd numbered years. In 2019, Mayor and Council Posts 4, 5 and 6 will be up for election.  In 2021, Posts 1, 2 and 3 will be elected.

Those residents who wish to qualify as a candidate in the November 5, 2019 General Election for Mayor or City Council (Posts 4, 5, and 6) shall file a notice of candidacy in the Office of the City Clerk no earlier than 8:30 A.M on August 19, 2019 and no later than 5:00 P.M. on August 21, 2019. All candidates for Mayor shall pay a qualifying fee of $900.00 and candidates for City Council shall pay a qualifying fee of $450.00. Per the City of Alpharetta’s Charter, in order to qualify for office, a person shall have been a resident of the city for six (6) months prior to the date of election; shall have attained the age of twenty-one (21) years prior to the date of election; shall continue to reside in the city during that member's period of service; and shall be registered and qualified to vote in municipal elections of this city.

All council member positions shall be designated by posts numbered one (1) through six (6).

All candidates for election to council member positions shall designate, at the time of qualifying, the post to which they are seeking election.

All posts are city at large positions.

Mayor and Council Members are compensated as follows:

Mayor:  $30,000.00 per annum, payable monthly.

$15,000.00 per annum, payable monthly.


The mayor and council members shall be reimbursed for their actual and necessary expenses incurred in the performance of their official duties
